Einkorn Applesauce Cake
This time of year excites me to make all the fall recipes. This Applesauce cake is one of my favorites! While it is not a super common recipe, it’s a timeless classic and a favorite of mine. With the added excitement of using freshly milled Einkorn flour, I hope you will try it!
Here’s Why You’ll Just Love This Einkorn Recipe!

This cake on its own is simply amazing, but then you add the nutritional aspect of the Einkorn is simply exciting! Yes, I used the word exciting to describe from-scratch baking! Using the Einkorn flour adds so much to an already delicious cake. See my article on the benefits of Einkorn here. Einkorn can be somewhat difficult to use at times, but I’ve found when you use it in recipes with pastries or cakes, you would never even notice you’re using a whole wheat grain! So therefore I’m excited to show you how I used it in this delicious cake.
Convenient – With fall in full swing, I’m sure like us you’re attending lots of fall parties. I love sheet cakes precisely for this reason! They are great to serve to friends during gatherings.
Reliable – Applesauce cake is a recipe that is passed down from generation to generation. With its moist texture and flavorful taste, it’s no wonder it’s stayed popular over the years! It’s a great recipe that has you utilize what’s in your pantry.
Nostalgia – I don’t know about you, but this recipe always brings such a nostalgic feeling. In our area, we have a large Amish community. This recipe is a favorite among them. I will always have fun memories of Amish friends bringing me pans of applesauce cake.
Here are the ingredients you will need
Einkorn Flour: or freshly milled einkorn berries. I have a grain mill and thankfully have the opportunity to use fresh flour. Here’s the mill I use.
Applesauce: I canned a lot of applesauce this fall, so I used some of that. But any unsweetened applesauce will work.
Butter: My favorite store-bought butter is hands down Kerrygold butter! So if you can get it, get it! We thankfully have a milk cow who gives us gallons of cream a week. So I’m able to use raw butter. That’s a great option too if you have that available.
Eggs: I’m using our farm-fresh eggs here, but any eggs will work!
Brown sugar: Here is a great natural option for brown sugar.
How to make Einkorn Applesauce Cake
First, preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Then grab a bowl and mix all your dry ingredients. Set that aside and then move on to your wet ingredients.

Cream together the butter and sugar. Once that’s well incorporated, add your eggs. The recipe calls for three, but I only had two at the time so I may do with what I had. Then you will want to add in your applesauce, vanilla, and buttermilk. Mix well.

After that’s well incorporated add in your dry ingredients. Make sure you don’t over-mix.

Grease a 9×13 dish, and pour your cake batter in. Smooth out evenly in the pan. Then place it in your preheated oven!

While your cake is baking, let’s my the icing! Get your cream cheese, and butter and put it in your mixer. Cream together until nice and silky. Then add in your powdered sugar and vanilla flavoring. Once that’s all mixed, set it aside.

Now it’s time to get your cake out of the oven. Pull it out and let cool for a good 10 to 20 minutes. Once your cake is cooled, spread it on your cream cheese frosting. I went the extra mile and sprinkled it with a little bit of cinnamon.

And there you have it, a corn applesauce cake. I hope you enjoy it!
I hope you enjoyed this recipe as much as I did. My passion for baking from scratch is one I so enjoy sharing with others. Any recipes that get me in the kitchen, using whole food ingredients make me giddy with joy.
